4-H is a youth development program offered to 9-21 year olds. There are 7 clubs, 89 registered members with 114 projects, and 22 dedicated leaders volunteering their time in the Vanderhoof District. Please see the 4-H British Columbia page here
Each year, 4-H members start a new 'project'. The projects offered in the Vanderhoof District this year include Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine, Horse, Rabbit, Dog, Junior Leader and Cloverbuds (Cloverbuds is a project that explores future projects of 4-H at a simplified level for 6-8 year olds). Members keep track of their projects' expenses, weight gain, pedigree, etc.
As well as working on their projects, throughout the year 4-H members have the opportunity to participate in Public Speaking, Demonstrations, Speak and Shows, Education Displays and Judging Rallies.
On Achievement Day at the annual Nechako Valley Exhibition, members prepare their animals for, and participate in Showmanship and Confirmation Classes.
In order to receive an Achievement certificate for the year, members must satisfactorily pass a husbandry inspection, hand in a completed record book, and participate in their required Achievement class
Members with market animals sell their projects to local businesses and families at the 4-H Auction held the Saturday evening of the Exhibition. We are continually thankful to buyers for their generous support. We look forward to a successful year and we'll see everyone at the fair!
